Deming’s 14 points could transform a whole industry

The famous Plan- Do-Check-Act tool for improving quality and for improving businesses. The Deming’s 14 Points is not so famous as the PDCA cycle, yet it is another very important management tool. This tool is very powerful to transform a business. It is so powerful that if applied to an industry, it can transform the whole industry. In fact, the 14 points can be applied anywhere to small, medium or large organizations, to the service industry or manufacturing industry, to division within the company or to the whole company. The Japanese have immensely benefited from this management concept since 1950.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003eWhat are the 14 points?u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e1. Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service, with the aim to become competitive and to stay in business, and to provide jobs.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e2. Adopt the new philosophy. We are in a new economic age. Western management must awaken to the challenge, must learn their responsibilities, and take on leadership for change.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e3. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. Eliminate the need for inspection on a mass basis by building quality into the product in the first place.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e4. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag. Instead, minimize total cost. Move towards a single supplier for any one item, on a long-term relationship of loyalty and trust. Partner with suppliers.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e5. Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e6. Institute training on the job for all employees.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e7. Adopt and institute leadership. The aim of supervision should be to help people and machines and gadgets to do a better job. Supervision of management is in need of an overhaul, as well as supervision of production workers.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e8. Drive out fear, so that everyone may work effectively for the company.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e9. Break down barriers between employees and management. People ion research, design, sales, and production must work as a team, to foresee problems of production and in use that may be encountered with the product or service.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e10. Eliminate slogans, exhortations, and targets for the workforce asking for zero defects and new levels of productivity. Such exhortations only create adversarial relationships, as the bulk of the causes of low quality and low productivity belong to the system and thus lie beyond the power of the work force.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e11. a. Eliminate work standards (quotas) on the factory floor. Substitute leadership.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003eb. Eliminate management by objective. Remove barriers that rob the hourly paid worker of his right to pride in workmanship. This means, inter alia, abolishment of the annual or merit rating and management by objective.u003c/pu003eu003cp class=rtejustify\u003e13.
